Cottonwoods along Medano Creek and a dune wall, Great Sand Dunes, near Mosca
This picture obviously isn't the most colorful in my collection, and it might seem kind of dead and blah to some, but it is one I immediately gravitated toward as soon as I got the film back. This is one of my favorite areas of the Great Sand Dunes, which is at Castle Creek, as the 230-foot dune wall that rises vertically is really a very impressive sight, and an area where I spend at least a little time every trip here. This is my favorite picture of this section. You can see Medano Creek at the base of the wall, and then an arch-shaped slip-face on the left side. From my perch, I was waiting to time the moving clouds to where the sun would illuminate the dune wall and leave the foreground in the shade. Fortunately, they cooperated. This adds substantially more depth to what it would otherwise have if the scene were in entire shade or full sun, and really makes the winter cottonwoods come to life, if you will, and giving them a more pronounced form.
