Sunrise on a sub-peak of Mt. Edith Cavell, Jasper National Park, Alberta

bout this image

I took this on my 2005 trip to the Canadian Rockies. It was a trip that saw a lot of clouds, and during the trip it seemed as though I never had any good light to work with. I shot this near the Mt. Christie viewpoint along the Athabasca River and was zoomed in substantially looking to Mt. Edith Cavell, one of my favorite mountains. Its summit actually lies hidden behind the cloud mass in the center and would extend to just off the top of the frame if it were exposed. These are some of the best possible conditions one could hope for when photographing mountains—wonderful warm light, clouds that partly obscure the scene revealing high peaks, and even make the existing warm light warmer. It just makes the scene much more dramatic and goes to make mountains even more impressive than they otherwise would be under clear skies. I just love the way the peak on the right goes in and out of the clouds, then the wonderful cliff face on the left balances out the scene.
