Horseshoe Lake and clouds blowing over Eureka Mountain (13,489'), above Westcliffe

Hermit Pass is one of my favorite places to visit. It's the fourth highest pass road in the state at 13,020'. While not a through road, it offers a surprising amount of wonderful photographic opportunities. I have number of other pictures that I really like from here, but I suppose this one is my favorite. Taken in early August, 2007, there was a thin haze layer on the eastern horizon that prevented the clouds from getting any color at sunrise, but once the sun rose over the layer, alpenglow finally happened. Most of this ridge in front is the eastern face of Hermit Peak. The whole time the clouds were just rolling over Eureka Mountain, just like you see here, which was really neat to watch. I really enjoy the wide sweeping rock face that leads up to it.
