Kendall Mountain sunset above Silverton

bout this image

Like the last picture, it was taken on the same amazing two-week, in-state trip in early August, 2009. This is from one of my favorite perches in the state. Situated on a four-wheel-drive road 3,000 feet above Silverton, which lies directly behind me on the other side of the mountain, this view is off to the southeast that overlooks the Grenadier and Needle ranges. The Grenadiers are the far ridge of peaks. I had just spent about two hours with a wonderful family of seven mountain goats when the sun started to light up the near ridge for the first time in awhile after the passing storm. I drove just a very short distance to this point and the most intense rainbow came into view, though this scene was not at its most intense moment. I have spent a number of nights up here at the 12,700-foot mark hoping for a great sunrise or sunset, but it finally all came together on this night, and I was able to get a number more shots that are superb. It was a great way to cap off an already epic trip.
