Sunset, Medicine Lake, Jasper National Park, Alberta
After returning from my 2005 Canadian Rockies trip, I had considered this my best picture up to that point. I just felt it had all the elements that really came together to make a very special image—incredibly great warm light, a sky full of great clouds, and then the contrasting peninsulas, one light and one dark, which break the reflection and gives the scene added depth. While I still feel it is one of my strongest shots, I have come to like a number of my images equally, so it's difficult to play favorites. I remember this evening like it was yesterday. It was a spot that was a goal to get a sunset shot from during the trip, and had tried to capture it a couple of times prior, but the weather never cooperated being too cloudy. This day was promising. I arrived a few hours prior to sunset at the lake's shore. I literally drove right to this spot, and was heating up some tortellini in the back end of my 4Runner as the light was entering its warm stage. Shortly after I ate, dessert came in the form of these conditions. This was taken on the 24th day of my 44-day trip, and I finally struck gold. I had so much gray, cloudy skies up to and after this point that it really felt unbelievably great to be rewarded like this.
