Mt. Patterson (center, 10,489'), Peyto Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta
Peyto Lake is the second place (after Moraine Lake) in the Canadian Rockies that really struck me during my first visit there on a family vacation in 1994. It was definitely my favorite scene. Obviously, it's a place of iconic lore, and for very good reason. So, on my first return trip on my own in 2005, and now armed with a lot more than a point-and-shoot along some photography know-how, it is a place I knew I would spend a lot of time at. It is one of those places I just had to come away with a great picture of. I think I came up here five times during my six-week trip for sunrises. This is my favorite shot from here, though I do have a very close second from a different day. This is a fairly subtle sunrise, but the various orange accents contrasting with the lake's color are all it needs to make the scene come alive.
