San Luis Peak (14,014'), near Creede

bout this image

Taken in late July, 2006, this was the last place I visited on my wildflower trip before returning home. This is a spot I hadn't been to prior, and shooting sunset here of San Luis Peak was definitely on my itinerary. Whether or not I'd get a sunset is always anyone's guess. This was taken as a thunderstorm was starting up over the area, but had not quite made it directly overhead. To me, this picture encapsulates just about everything in a typical summer afternoon in the Colorado high country—the dark blue-gray clouds moving off to the east still storming somewhere, though clearer skies are never too far off, and then the green tundra becoming vibrant green again in a window of sunlight. I always like seeing higher peaks in shade, such as seen here, as they always appear much more ominous and maybe even look bigger than they would otherwise. All this was complimented by the red, glass-like shale slabs.
