San Luis Peak (14,014'), near Creede
This was taken three hours after the previous picture right near sunset, and I find it fairly amazing that two of my favorite shots occurred so close together. If nothing else, that means it was a very productive evening! The thunderstorm that was passing through wasn't quite done as it was obviously still raining a little ways out, and I can tell you that the skies were still very much dark directly overhead. I was parked on a high hill where I took this and lighting was still a frequent player. I'll be honest, I had my tail between my legs and I had my tripod set up right against the truck and I was about two feet from the driver's seat ready to act fast! I am not usually one to take big risks with lightning. Thankfully, the lightning stayed clear enough while San Luis turned an amazing intense gold—and I remembered it being much more gold than I've been able to reproduce here. The sun found a small seam on the horizon to give me this memorable moment.
