The Three Apostles from Harrison Flat, Collegiate Peaks Wilderness near Winfield

bout this image

Prior to taking a stab at shooting this location on a one-night backpacking trip in August, 2008, about four of my photographer friends had visited this place in the years prior, and the crazy thing was that each one of them had really incredible conditions for sunset and/or sunrise. Usually, lowly ol' me can't buy a great sunset or rise, but I knew I had to visit this place once I started getting into backpacking. Well, what do you know, I experienced one of my best ever sunsets in Colorado! This place must just dish them out every time, or so it would seem! The sky really has all kinds of different things going on, which really adds a lot of life to the scene. From the intense cobalt blue sky, to the yellow-orange thunderhead in the distance to the perfect red accents over the contrasting blue-gray clouds. You can't get too much more diverse than that. Add to that the late alpenglow and the perfect reflection that is broken up wonderfully by the detailed grass blades. It all came together for me on this night. Ice Mountain (13,951') takes center stage with an unnamed 13,860' (unofficially, North Apostle) and 13,568' (unofficially, West Apostle) mountain off to its left and right, respectively, all along the Continental Divide.
