My rating: 6/10 The China Wall trail is a relative unknown, and would have remained such to myself if it weren't for recent reports and talks about it on 4x4Trails.net and Colorado4x4.org. It is located about 25 miles southeast of Jefferson on CR 77 at the town of Tarryall and at the southern end of the Tarryall Mountains. Apparently, it is open year-round according to a few other sources, but I will hesitate to confirm myself. Paul (Dozer on YotaTech) and myself ran this for the first time on 12/6/03 and had a great time. While it is a pretty short trail, it is quite scenic with a number of boulder outcroppings that are commonplace in this region and like what you'd find along the Rampart Range. The trail is comprised of both Forest Roads 212 and 204. There is only one section that earns it the 6 or 7 rating you will find given, which is at the northern section of FR 212. It was a pretty tight and off-camber (30 degrees) squeeze through, followed by some larger rocks. Every other obstacle along the route is optional, or has optional bypasses, whichever way you choose to look at it. For a good map and directions, Monica has a wonderful write-up on TrailDamage.com here. |
