Rating: 4/10 Governor Basin is a fork off the far more popular Yankee Boy Basin road. It forks off to the west and climbs to some of the most outstanding views in the San Juans. In fact, this makes my top five roads in the region for this reason. I have rated it a technical rating of 4 primarily because of the shelf sections, which I generally don't do for that reason alone, but there are a couple of real narrow stretches higher up. The road surface only warrants a 3, and there is only one rockier section, which is on the east side below treeline fairly early on. There are a few spurs near the top that you can explore. You can go up to the Mountain Top mine, Virginius Mine, or go over the ridge and drop into Sidney Basin on the other side. There is also a rockier section on this side. The Sidney Basin section makes a great loop as it connects back with the main Governor road on the east side below treeline. There are 99 pictures in the gallery. A number of them are similar, but dang, the views are a real treat! |
