Imogene
is the third highest pass in the state at 13,113' (behind Argentine
and Mosquito) which was built in 1880 and goes between Telluride
and Ouray. One of the best views in the region is to be had at the
top. Imogene is often combined as a second part of a loop drive
with Black Bear Pass, a couple mountains to the south. Being that
the west side of Black Bear is one-way into traffic, most of the
Imogene traffic goes from Telluride to Ouray, so you can keep this
in mind if you're only driving Imogene and want to face less oncoming
traffic. The picture gallery below, however, is traveling from Ouray
to Telluride. In addition, if you aren't going to travel Black Bear
because of time constraints or lack of confidence, it might ease
you to know the scenery is pretty much identical for both, so you
won't be missing out on too much from that perspective. The road
itself is pretty straight forward and is on par with what Engineer
Pass offers, so nothing too rocky, with the vast majority being
a gentle dirt road with some shelves. I have also included a few
pictures in the gallery of the short spur into Richmond Basin, located
on the Ouray side out of Imogene Basin. |
