The Elk Mountains are home to some of the most scenic areas in the state, the iconic Maroon Bells, and the second tallest (not highest) peak in the state, Mt. Sopris. The Elk Mountains are comprised of a few sub-ranges like the Anthracite, Ruby and West Elk Mountains. They are bordered by Carbondale to the north, Gunnison River on the south, and the Taylor River on the southeastern corner.
